Ramesh Sippy makes a comeback after 25 Years with Shimla Mirchi

In a sudden turn of events, producers Viacom 18 have decided to release the long-delayed Hema Malini - Rajkummar Rao – Rakul Preet Singh starrer Shimla Mirchi. The film about a romantic relationship between a young man and an older woman played by Rao and Hema, was shot in 2014. The film then got into serious production issues and was shelved for all practical purposes.

Ramesh Sippy makes a comeback after 25 Years with Shimla Mirchi

A pity since Shimla Mirchi was the great Sholay director Ramesh Sippy’s first directorial venture in 25 years. The super-gifted Ramesh Sippy last directed Zamaana Deewana with Shah Rukh Khan and Raveena Tandon in 1995. The film was a disaster and the director of such neo-classics as Seeta Aur GeetaSholayShakti and Saagar went into a self-imposed hibernation.

Only to return in 2014. When Shimla Mirchi was completed and remained unreleased, Ramesh Sippy sadly said, “I don’t think that film is going to get released.” Happily, Sippy was wrong.

The film’s leading lady Hema Malini, who has not been seen on screen since Aman Ke Farishtey in 2016 is surprised to know about the sudden release of Shimla Mirchi. The unbeatable director-actress combo of Ramesh Sippy and Hema Malini created history three times over with AndazSeeta Aur Geeta and Sholay.

Would they again generate the same hysteria with their fourth outing together in Shimla Mirchi?

Says Hema, “I am working with Rameshji after nearly 40 years. But it seems like just the other. We picked up the threads of our association as if the big time-gap didn’t happen in-between. He is very mischievous with me. There is a glint in his eyes and a secret smile that haven’t faded with time. He is still the same. Shooting with Rameshji again was l a lot of fun. Let’s see if this time around we again emerge with something special. Rameshji has given me another very important role in Shimla Mirchi. Rameshji insisted. And when I heard the script I knew why. At my age actresses don’t get such important roles that easily.”

Clash of the Dawoods: Farhan Akhtar versus Ram Gopal Varma

Two leading filmmakers are rushing to the streaming platform with bio-series on Dawood Ibrahim. While Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment’s series is based on investigative journalist author Hussain’s Dongri To Dubai , Ram Gopal’s Varma’s D Company is based entirely on his own research. Apparently, Excel’s excursion to Dawood’s territory began shooting before the pandemic. No information is available on its progress. I asked the author Hussain Zaidi and he said he had no idea of the progress on the project. Says Ram Gopal Varma, “I honestly don’t know what they are making. I read Dongri To Dubai which is very anecdotal in nature, like piecing together a number of crime columns published in newspapers. Also the subject matter of my series D Company is in the public domain. It’s the understanding and interpretation which will differ. Anyway may the best man win.” Incidentally these are not the only cinematic efforts on Dawood. Nikhil Advani made D Day whe...

“I’m hoping this will be the year of big-screen entertainers”, says Vaani Kapoor

Vaani Kapoor has three massive films lined up for release this year. She is eagerly waiting for the release of Shamshera , in which she has been paired opposite Ranbir Kapoor, BellBottom will see her opposite Akshay Kumar and in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui , she is Ayushmann Khurrana’s love interest. The versatile actress hopes that her big films contribute to bringing people back to the theatres. “I’m hoping this will be the year of big-screen entertainers! People are waiting for the virus to be under control and with the vaccines, the confidence of the people will slowly build. They would want to go back to doing the things that they used to. People are missing many experiences that made them happy and we are a society that thrives on community hangouts,” says Vaani. She adds, “Community celebrations will come back in a big way and for Indians going to a theatre to watch a movie with friends and family is a huge thing. That’s going to make a big comeback. They would want to come bac...
